Anthropic just signed a $35 billion cloud computing agreement with Lambda, the Nvidia-backed cloud provider, to secure a data center in Nueces County, Texas. Reuters broke the story, citing an anonymous source. The facility will deliver roughly 350 megawatts of capacity, with Hut 8 — yes, the former crypto mining outfit — handling development. Nvidia itself holds the lease on the property, per the Wall Street Journal.
This isn’t an isolated spending spree. Only last week, Anthropic announced a separate $45 billion contract with Nscale for a West Virginia data center. That’s $80 billion in infrastructure commitments within days. The company is clearly scrambling to keep Claude and Claude Code responsive as enterprise demand accelerates. Hut 8 had already signaled something big was coming back in July, when it disclosed a 15-year lease with an unnamed client. Turns out that client was almost certainly Anthropic.
The timing matters. Anthropic is reportedly preparing for an IPO, and locking in compute capacity before going public makes strategic sense. Investors want to see that the company can actually serve the demand it’s generating, not just claim it. Lambda’s Nvidia backing also gives Anthropic indirect access to the chip supply chain at a moment when GPUs remain the scarcest resource in tech.
Still, none of the companies involved commented on the deal to Reuters — standard fare for infrastructure agreements this size. The silence doesn’t make the numbers any less real. Anthropic is betting tens of billions that demand for its models will keep outpacing what major cloud providers can offer on their own. Whether that bet pays off depends on whether Claude can keep converting this compute into revenue, not just user growth.
