Anthropic's Opus 5 drops at half the price — and it won't hoard your data

For enterprises that have been sitting on the sidelines because they don’t want their proprietary code or customer conversations fed back into a training pipeline, this removes the single biggest objection. Anthropic isn’t just competing on benchmarks anymore. They’re competing on trust architecture. And that’s a fight OpenAI and Google aren’t well-positioned to win, given how their default data policies work.

I’ve watched pricing wars in cloud compute for a decade, and this feels different. It’s not a race to the bottom on cost per token — it’s a repositioning of what the product actually is. Opus 5 signals that Anthropic sees its path not through flashier demos, but through being the vendor procurement and legal teams will actually approve. Boring? Maybe. The unanswered question is whether the performance holds up. Anthropic hasn’t published exhaustive benchmarks against GPT-4o or Gemini 1.5 Pro yet, and that omission feels deliberate. If it’s comparable, this becomes a very uncomfortable quarter for competitors who charge more and keep your data.
