ChatGPT Pulse flips the script: AI now starts the conversation

OpenAI just took the covers off ChatGPT Pulse, a preview feature for Pro subscribers that does something fundamentally different: it starts the conversation before you do. Rolling out now on mobile, Pulse is designed to break the traditional query-response loop by proactively researching and delivering personalized updates each morning. It pulls from your chat history, its own memory, and any direct feedback you’ve given to surface what’s supposed to be relevant—think follow-ups on projects, a recipe suggestion for dinner, or a reminder to buy that birthday gift. The whole thing arrives as a set of visual cards you can scan quickly or dive into deeper.

The real ambition here goes way beyond a morning digest. Pulse can plug directly into your Gmail and Google Calendar if you let it, synthesizing data from your actual schedule to draft meeting agendas or suggest restaurants for an upcoming trip. That integration is off by default, a wise choice given the permission creep anxiety that tends to follow any feature nosing around your inbox. You steer the ship by telling the system what to research, and you can get granular—one suggested command is asking it to ‘focus on professional tennis updates tomorrow.’

OpenAI partnered with college students through its ChatGPT Lab for early feedback, and one insight jumped out: the tool only started feeling useful when people actively curated it. That prompted the team to double down on simple feedback mechanisms like thumbs up and thumbs down. One student described getting an update that was ‘several logical steps ahead’ of where they were in a conversation about managing their calendar during a grant period in Taiwan, surfacing train and commute information they never would have looked for on their own.

Of course, this is a preview, and the company is refreshingly direct that it won’t always nail it. You might get tips for a project you already wrapped up. The larger picture here is a paradigm shift from a reactive Q&A machine to an agent that works asynchronously on your behalf—researching, planning, and eventually acting. It’s the simplest form of a future where progress happens when you aren’t actively asking for it, and OpenAI says more app integrations and contextual updates throughout the day are already on the roadmap.
