Anthropic has officially rolled out the revamped Projects feature for Claude Code, marking a significant shift from single-threaded interactions to coordinated multi-agent workflows. This update allows developers to orchestrate a team of Claude agents under a unified roof, complete with shared memory, common goals, and a centralized library of files. Instead of juggling isolated chat sessions, users can now manage complex development tasks where multiple agents work in parallel, each handling distinct threads while staying aligned with the broader project objectives.
The architecture behind this feature is surprisingly robust. Each thread operates as an independent Claude Code cloud session, working on its own branch and repository copy to prevent immediate conflicts. A dedicated “coordinator” agent oversees the operation, ensuring that work remains organized and coherent. When multiple threads inevitably touch the same codebase, the system handles overlaps by treating them as standard merge conflicts, similar to how pull requests are managed in traditional version control. This approach leverages existing developer workflows rather than forcing entirely new paradigms, making adoption smoother for engineering teams accustomed to Git-based collaboration.
Scalability is built into the core design. Individual threads can further delegate their assigned tasks using subagents, loops, and specialized workflows, allowing large assignments to be broken down and executed faster. Users retain granular control, able to interact with specific threads directly or monitor overall progress through the main project chat. While the current launch relies on cloud-based execution, Anthropic has confirmed that support for local tools and code is arriving “very soon,” addressing a key concern for developers who prioritize data sovereignty and local environment fidelity.
Access to this beta feature starts today for select Claude Pro and Max subscribers, with plans to expand to all Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users in the near future. This move positions Claude Code directly against competitors like Grok Bot, which also specialize in managing groups of AI agents. By enabling true parallelism and shared context, Anthropic is betting that the future of AI-assisted coding isn’t just about smarter single agents, but about better orchestration of many.
