Koray Kavukcuoglu isn’t mincing words. Google DeepMind’s new chief made it clear in a recent interview that his team has exactly one priority: being at the frontier of AI model development. “To put it very bluntly, there’s nothing other than being at the frontier that is important for us,” he said. “I’m 100% certain that we will be at the frontier.”
The candor is notable because it directly counters speculation that Google has quietly deprioritized the model race, betting instead on price-to-performance and distribution through its massive product ecosystem. Kavukcuoglu acknowledged reality — Google’s current models are “a little bit below the frontier” — but argued the company has the team, resources, and full-stack infrastructure to close the gap.
What he didn’t offer was a timeline. On Gemini 4, he repeated the familiar line about it being “the most ambitious run” so far, adding “touch wood, it’s going well.” Nothing new there. Gemini 3.5 Pro, now months overdue, got no meaningful update either. For a company insisting frontier leadership is everything, the absence of concrete news is hard to ignore — especially while competitors ship.
The one area where Kavukcuoglu pointed to tangible momentum is the Flash series. He described the jump from Flash 3.5 through 3.6 to 3.7 as a fundamental shift from language model to coding agent. “Basically, turn this whole thing into an agent, from a model to an agent,” he said. “Software engineering is the most critical domain and environment that you want your systems to be successful at.”
That framing aligns with where the entire industry has been moving — Anthropic’s Claude Code, OpenAI’s Codex, and a wave of agentic coding tools all treat software engineering as the proving ground for autonomous AI. DeepMind betting its near-term credibility on the Flash line’s coding capabilities makes strategic sense. But confidence without a shipping date only buys so much goodwill. Kavukcuoglu says he’s 100% certain Google will be at the frontier. The market is still waiting to see the receipt.
