The reason is El Niño. We’re currently in the early stages of an El Niño phase, the naturally occurring Pacific Ocean pattern that releases stored ocean heat into the atmosphere. The kicker is timing. El Niño’s effect on global temperatures lags the ocean pattern’s development by several months. That means the heat we’re feeling now is only the opening act. Hausfather calls it “one of the fastest onsets in the observational record.” That speed matters. A rapidly developing El Niño means less time for the atmosphere to adjust gradually, and a stronger-than-usual release of heat that’s been accumulating in the oceans.

None of this happens in a vacuum. Climate change has been steadily loading the system with heat for decades, and El Niño is simply the mechanism that dumps some of that stored energy back into the atmosphere. UN Secretary-General António Guterres put it bluntly: “El Niño conditions will pour fuel on the fire of a warming world.” The implication is uncomfortable. If 2025 already delivered record heat across three continents, a stronger El Niño peaking in 2026 or 2027 could push global temperatures into genuinely uncharted territory.
