Gemini hits 1B users as ChatGPT's once-commanding lead evaporates

A billion users. It’s a number Google has now hit for the 14th time with a product, but this one feels different. CEO Sundar Pichai announced on X that Gemini has crossed the billion monthly user mark, calling it the company’s fastest-growing product ever. The milestone lands just weeks after OpenAI quietly acknowledged ChatGPT had also passed that threshold, burying the news in an August 6th blog post. But the trajectories tell two very different stories.

OpenAI’s growth is decelerating. The company reported 900 million weekly active users in February and didn’t reach a billion weekly users until July—a five-month slog that represents a significant slowdown for what was once touted as the fastest-growing software in history. Google, by contrast, sprinted from 950 million monthly users in late July to 1 billion last week. While comparing weekly and monthly metrics is messy, the simplest read is accurate: ChatGPT remains larger, but Gemini is gaining ground fast.

The Android factor can’t be overstated. Gemini chief Josh Woodward noted the model has over 100 million active users on iOS, which means the vast majority of that billion-user figure is riding on Android devices where Gemini comes preinstalled. It’s a distribution advantage that makes OpenAI’s hardware ambitions look less like a vanity project and more like an existential necessity. When your competitor can just show up on every new phone, you need your own on-ramp.

For a long time, ChatGPT was the de facto brand for AI chatbots. That commanding lead has largely evaporated. The models themselves have been leapfrogging each other all year—Anthropic’s Claude Code forced OpenAI to scramble with Codex, and Google has been weaving Gemini into every surface of its product ecosystem. Now both companies face the same uncomfortable question: a billion people have shown up, but what are they actually doing, and how does anyone make real money from this?
