Google's AI Mode bets you'll search for 'adult tennis lessons' to actually log off

Here’s a stat that tells you something: searches for “how to digital detox” have spiked 110% since January. People aren’t just doomscrolling anymore — they’re hunting for adult tennis lessons, trail running groups, and chess strategies. Google noticed, and it’s positioning AI Mode as the bridge between your screen and the real world.

Rhiannon Williams, who wrote up the feature set, outlined five scenarios where the tool connects your digital queries to IRL outcomes. The most interesting one involves Personal Intelligence, which taps into your Google Calendar to find, say, a cooking class that doesn’t conflict with your kid’s soccer practice. It’s a smart play to differentiate from competitors — Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity don’t have that data graph. But it also raises the familiar privacy question: how much of your life are you comfortable wiring into a search box?

There’s also a Canva integration that feels genuinely useful. You can prompt AI Mode to generate a dinner party flyer in a “modern minimalistic style,” tweak it in Canva, and send it off without leaving the search results. It’s a small workflow improvement, but it eliminates the friction of downloading, reopening, and re-uploading files. The shopping angle is more straightforward: ask for affordable hiking boots with ankle support, and AI Mode surfaces products with the option to check local store inventory by having Google call the shop for you.

I’m somewhat skeptical about the Canvas feature for chess strategy. The idea of an AI building a playable game simulation to practice against sounds neat, but these tools still tend to hallucinate rules under pressure. The real test will be whether AI Mode actually reduces screen time or just becomes another elaborate rabbit hole to fall into while you’re supposed to be touching grass.
