Google’s AI brain drain: Hassabis shifts to chair role as Jeff Dean leaves to start new lab

The architect of Google’s AI strategy is stepping back just as one of the company’s longest-serving technical legends walks out the door. Sundar Pichai announced Wednesday that Demis Hassabis, who has led Google DeepMind since its merger with Google Brain, will transition to the role of chair for the division while also taking on the title of Alphabet’s chief scientist. It’s a move that gives Hassabis more altitude to focus on the moonshot he’s personally obsessed with: using AI to tackle drug discovery through Isomorphic Labs, which he’ll continue to run.

Hassabis didn’t mince words about his priorities. “It’s time for AI to prove its unequivocal value to the world, and what better way to demonstrate that than to help finally cure diseases like cancer,” he said in a note to staff. Taking over the day-to-day grind is Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind’s CTO, who will report directly to Pichai as the new SVP of Google DeepMind and keep his chief AI architect hat on. The reshuffle suggests Google is betting its core AI research can run without Hassabis in the cockpit, while he chases a Nobel-worthy application of the technology.

The bigger shock might be who’s leaving. Jeff Dean—Google’s 30th employee and the engineering force behind TensorFlow, MapReduce, and basically every major infrastructure project at the company for two decades—is teaming up with Google Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat to form Discovery Loop. The new venture is structured as a public benefit corporation, with Google signing on as a “founding investor.” Its pitch: build AI systems that can automatically solve hard problems in machine learning and science, accelerating the entire R&D pipeline. It’s the kind of ambitious, open-ended mission that’s becoming harder to pursue inside a public company obsessed with quarterly product launches.

Losing Dean and Ghemawat simultaneously creates a deep technical vacuum that a title change for Hassabis can’t fill. While Pichai framed Discovery Loop as a fresh start Google is backing, the departure of a 25-year veteran and one of the most respected researchers in the field signals that the gravitational pull of a startup—even one bankrolled by your former employer—now beats the allure of navigating Google’s increasingly complex organizational chart. The question left hanging: can Kavukcuoglu retain the research talent that stayed for Hassabis and Dean, now that both have effectively moved on?
