Hugging Face is finally giving enterprise customers what regulated industries have been asking for: control over where their model weights and datasets physically live. The new Storage Regions feature, rolling out now on the Hub, lets organizations choose between US and EU data centers, with Asia-Pacific flagged as coming soon.
The setup lives in org settings. Non-enterprise users hit a paywall screen — this is an Enterprise Hub feature, not something free tier users get. Once subscribed, admins see an audit of where their existing repos are stored, plus dropdowns to set default locations for future model and dataset creation. Any repo sitting outside the default region gets a visible tag, so team members can spot non-standard storage at a glance.
The compliance angle is the obvious draw. Companies operating under GDPR or similar frameworks often have hard requirements that data stay within specific jurisdictions. Hugging Face is positioning this as the missing piece for EU companies that wanted to use the Hub for production ML but couldn’t legally store training data or fine-tuned models on US servers. Inference endpoints are included in the regional storage story, which matters — storing a model in the EU does little good if inference runs elsewhere.
Performance is the sleeper benefit. Hugging Face claims European teams storing repos in the EU region can expect roughly 4-5x faster upload and download speeds compared to US-hosted storage. That’s not a marginal improvement — when you’re pushing around 70GB Llama checkpoints or multi-terabyte datasets, cutting transfer times by 80% changes how iteratively a team can work. Hugging Face isn’t the first to offer regional pinning, but for an ecosystem this central to open model distribution, it removes a legitimate blocker for enterprise adoption.
