Hugging Face just made building on Spaces dramatically less tedious. Spaces Dev Mode, now in beta for PRO subscribers, lets developers connect directly to their Space via VS Code or SSH. Instead of the old workflow—edit locally, push with git, wait for the container to rebuild—you click once, start editing, and refresh the Space to see changes immediately.

Setup is straightforward. Create a Space, navigate to Settings, scroll down, and click “Enable Dev Mode.” The Space restarts automatically. Once it’s running, you can launch VS Code in your browser or connect your local instance. SSH is also available for developers who prefer a different IDE. The feature removes a real pain point: that slow feedback loop between writing code and seeing it run in the hosted environment.

Hugging Face demonstrated the workflow with a Gradio Space, changing a color theme, refreshing, and seeing the update without pushing or rebuilding. When you’re satisfied with the changes, you commit and merge to persist them. It’s a small change on paper, but it fundamentally alters how iteratively you can work.

The beta restriction to PRO subscribers is worth noting, but the direction is clear. Hugging Face has been steadily closing the gap between Spaces and a full-fledged cloud development environment. This isn’t just about convenience—it’s about making Spaces viable for serious, iterative development work rather than just demo hosting. The question is how quickly this reaches free-tier users and whether it pushes other model-hosting platforms to offer similar direct-edit capabilities.
