Microsoft Kills Its Double Copilot Apps, Merges Them Into One 'Super App'

Microsoft is finally cleaning up the mess of having two separate Copilot apps. The company announced it will merge its consumer Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot into a single unified “Microsoft Copilot” app, starting with a worldwide rollout for mobile and web in mid-August and Windows and Mac apps in mid-September. For anyone who has been annoyed by seeing two identical Copilot icons cluttering their taskbar or system tray, this is a welcome change. Microsoft is calling it a technical milestone on the path to a larger “super app” it plans to launch later this year.

What happens to your existing data depends on how you currently use Copilot. If you only used the consumer version, your chats and content move with you to the updated app. Microsoft 365 Copilot users will see minor navigation tweaks, a new icon, and gain access to Copilot chat. If you used both, your content gets merged into the single app but remains siloed between personal Microsoft accounts and work or school Entra ID accounts. Enterprise security and compliance controls stay untouched, and core Copilot features remain free, though Microsoft warns some users may see different usage limits.

Not everything survives the transition. Podcasts and Deep Research are being retired entirely after August 18th. Group Chat threads and messages won’t carry over either. Shopping and Copilot Health may be temporarily unavailable during the rollout. It’s a notable pruning of features that had only recently been introduced, suggesting Microsoft is prioritizing a cleaner, more focused experience over feature sprawl.

The consolidation comes months after Microsoft appointed a new Copilot chief to oversee both consumer and commercial sides of the assistant. The unified app also signals a shift toward the commercial interface, moving away from the more distinctive consumer design that launched in 2024 after Mustafa Suleyman took over Microsoft AI. The endgame here is clear: one app, one icon, one assistant that can handle both your personal queries and your work documents without forcing you to figure out which Copilot you’re supposed to be using.
