Nadella confirms Microsoft's Copilot 'super app' merging chat, code, and agents this year

Satya Nadella just drew a line in the sand. On Wednesday’s earnings call, the Microsoft CEO confirmed the company is stitching together its scattered Copilot universe — chat, GitHub coding, the Cowork tool, and agentic Autopilot features — into a single “super app” launching this year. His framing was direct: “Copilot is evolving rapidly from chat to Cowork to Autopilots,” Nadella said, calling the consolidation “a major step forward.”

This isn’t a casual product refresh. It’s an admission that fragmentation was becoming a liability. Users currently bounce between separate Copilot experiences, which is exactly the kind of friction a platform company wants to eliminate. By merging code generation directly into the same interface where a marketer drafts copy or an analyst queries data, Microsoft is betting the whole becomes stickier than the parts. The language Nadella used — “both consumer and commercial experiences” — signals this won’t be a walled-off enterprise tool. It’s aiming for the broad, messy overlap where people work and live.

The timing isn’t accidental. OpenAI recently revealed its own ChatGPT Work app that blends chat with its Codex coding tool. Microsoft, despite its deep partnership with OpenAI, is clearly not content to be just an infrastructure provider. The $90 billion revenue quarter Nadella reported — driven heavily by AI and cloud — gives him the financial cover to move fast and break his own organizational silos. A Fortune report had already tipped the super app’s development months ago, but this is the first on-the-record confirmation from the top.

I’m watching for two things. First, whether this app genuinely simplifies the experience or just creates a new, more complex front door to the same underlying chaos. Second, what happens to standalone GitHub Copilot when it’s just a tab inside a larger product. Developers are a finicky constituency, and they don’t love a bundled experience they didn’t ask for.
