Lunar Outpost, a startup specializing in space robotics, revealed Thursday that its next rover will pack Nvidia’s Jetson chips to process lidar data locally on the lunar surface. It’s a gritty engineering challenge that could mark the first time a GPU operates outside of Earth’s orbit. Nvidia also recently partnered with Firefly Aerospace—the first private outfit to stick a lunar landing—to run Jetson on a moon-orbiting satellite for imagery processing.

Running silicon on the moon is brutal. Unlike Earth-orbiting GPUs shielded by our magnetosphere, lunar hardware faces raw cosmic radiation and temperature swings that would cook most electronics. Then there’s the lunar night. “Your system has to survive lunar night and has to do so on very low power,” Cyrus noted. The payoff, if they pull it off, is a rover that thinks for itself—processing its surroundings in real-time without waiting for a signal from Houston. Cyrus says the autonomy stack is now a blend of deterministic code and physical AI models running in parallel.

The bigger picture is about permanence, not just planting flags. Lunar Outpost is working on a larger rover, Pegasus, meant to carry astronauts. But that vehicle is riding on Blue Origin’s rocket, which hit a snag this summer. Cyrus is diplomatic about delays, saying they appear to be making progress. For now, the smaller rovers are set to fly on Falcon 9 rockets before year’s end. A sustained human presence on the moon will need a robotic workforce that can handle heavy lifting autonomously, and that workforce needs a brain that won’t fry.
