Nvidia is spending $13 billion to acquire Hugging Face, the platform that has become the de facto library for open AI models and datasets. It’s a striking move for the $5.4 trillion chip giant, which is now the world’s most valuable company. Just last year, Hugging Face turned down a large investment from Nvidia at a $7 billion valuation to preserve its independence. That independence is now gone, and the price tag nearly doubled in the process.
CEO Jensen Huang framed the deal as a bet on the open-weight ecosystem. “Open weights enable start-ups, established businesses, universities, and public institutions to build on advanced capabilities without training every model from scratch or paying frontier-model prices for every task,” he said. The logic is straightforward: Nvidia sells the chips that run AI. Open models run on customer hardware, not just hyperscaler clouds. More open models downloaded means more GPUs sold. Hugging Face is the distribution hub for those models, which makes it a strategic asset, not just a popular one.
The acquisition is the largest in Nvidia’s history, eclipsing the $6.9 billion Mellanox deal in 2020 that helped Nvidia expand beyond chips into full data center infrastructure. This one is different. Mellanox supplied networking hardware. Hugging Face controls a distribution channel that shapes which AI applications gain traction worldwide. Nvidia already has its own family of models. Now it will own the platform where millions of models and datasets live, giving it unusual leverage over the open AI movement it claims to champion.
Regulators will almost certainly take a hard look. The deal isn’t expected to close until 2027, and competition authorities on both sides of the Atlantic have been eager to scrutinize Big Tech’s AI acquisitions. The irony is hard to miss: a company that built its fortune selling picks and shovels to everyone is now buying the town square where the gold rush happens. Whether that accelerates open AI or quietly tilts the playing field is the question the next two years will answer.
