OpenAI expands Education for Countries program with Singapore

OpenAI is taking its AI education program global. At the Education World Forum in London, the company announced Singapore is joining its Education for Countries initiative, which launched earlier this year at Davos. The program already includes Estonia, Greece, Italy, Slovakia, Trinidad & Tobago, Kazakhstan, the UAE, and Jordan. The core idea is to partner directly with governments to figure out how AI can actually improve learning—not just throw tools into classrooms. OpenAI is using three pillars: research-driven deployment with real measurement, localized AI tools like ChatGPT Edu and Codex that keep data secure, and serious teacher training. Estonia’s rollout alone now reaches 20,000 students and 4,600 teachers. OpenAI is working with local universities and Stanford to study impact in real classrooms and will share findings publicly. Why it matters: This is OpenAI’s most ambitious bet on education yet—shifting from selling chatbots to building sovereign AI infrastructure for entire school systems, which could set the template for how countries adopt AI responsibly at scale.
