OpenAI gives vets a free year of ChatGPT Plus for civilian shift

OpenAI is packaging the offer with 100 example chat prompts written by its own veteran employees, plus a tailored getting started video hosted on its OpenAI Academy. Identity verification runs through SheerID’s permission-based platform, a familiar gatekeeper for military discounts, to ensure the free tier actually lands in the hands of those transitioning out. The company gets a halo, and veterans get access to the latest models without a $20 monthly bill.

I’m curious how much of this is genuinely useful versus a smart but limited PR play. A chatbot can’t replace a dedicated transition counselor or a strong professional network, but for the late-night panic over a resume gap or confusion about the GI Bill, having a tool that can spitball answers without judgment is a real asset. The initiative doesn’t solve the systemic friction of leaving the military, but it puts a capable, free tool in the pocket of the 200,000 people who leave the service every year, and that’s far from nothing.
