OpenAI Launches Agentic AI Foundation with Linux

OpenAI is co-founding the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation, alongside Anthropic and Block, with support from Google, Microsoft, AWS, Bloomberg, and Cloudflare. The foundation aims to create neutral stewardship for open, interoperable infrastructure as agentic AI systems move from experimentation into real-world production. OpenAI is contributing AGENTS.md—an open format for providing agents with project-specific instructions—to ensure long-term community adoption. The move addresses fragmentation risks as agents handle real responsibilities in coding, workflow automation, and customer service. Without common standards, agent development could splinter into incompatible silos, limiting portability and safety. OpenAI has already contributed key building blocks like the Agents SDK, Apps SDK, and Codex CLI, which has helped merge over two million GitHub pull requests. The foundation builds on this work to ensure agents work seamlessly across tools and platforms.
