OpenAI launches free ChatGPT for Teachers through 2027

OpenAI is making a direct play for the K-12 classroom, launching a dedicated version of ChatGPT that’s completely free for verified U.S. educators through June 2027. The move isn’t just a generous giveaway—it’s a strategic land grab in a sector that’s been quietly adopting AI at breakneck speed. Three in five teachers already use an AI tool, and those who use it weekly report saving hours of time. That’s real traction, and OpenAI clearly wants to own it before Google or Microsoft lock down the education market with their existing enterprise contracts.

The new workspace, called ChatGPT for Teachers, bundles together the most powerful features from the consumer and enterprise tiers. Educators get unlimited access to GPT-5.1 Auto, search, file uploads, image generation, and integrations with Google Drive, Microsoft 365, and Canva. The security posture is what you’d expect for a school environment: data won’t be used for model training by default, and the system is built to support FERPA compliance. Administrators get role-based access controls and SAML SSO, which means IT departments can actually manage this at scale rather than dealing with a free-for-all of personal accounts.

What’s clever here is the onboarding. OpenAI isn’t just dropping a tool in teachers’ laps—they’re seeding the workspace with ready-to-use prompts from real educators and partnering with heavyweight districts like Dallas ISD, Fairfax County, and Houston ISD. That first cohort represents nearly 150,000 teachers and staff. The company is also releasing an AI Literacy Blueprint for school leaders and working with the American Federation of Teachers to train 400,000 educators. This is a full-court press.

The pricing question looms. Free through 2027 is a long runway, but OpenAI makes it clear that costs may change after that. They promise advance notice, but schools that build curriculum and workflows around this tool will face a tough decision if the bill comes due. For now, though, the offer is genuinely compelling—a professional-grade AI workspace at zero cost, backed by integration with tools teachers already use. The question isn’t whether teachers will try it. It’s whether districts can build sustainable AI strategies around a product with an uncertain long-term price tag.
