OpenAI launches India initiative with Tata Group

OpenAI has announced ‘OpenAI for India’ at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, a major push to expand AI access and adoption across the country. With over 100 million weekly ChatGPT users already in India, the initiative focuses on building sovereign AI capabilities through a partnership with Tata Group. This includes developing local data center capacity starting at 100 megawatts, potentially scaling to 1 gigawatt, to run OpenAI’s advanced models securely within India’s borders. Tata Group plans to deploy ChatGPT Enterprise across hundreds of thousands of employees, making it one of the largest enterprise AI rollouts globally. OpenAI is also expanding certifications and education partnerships, offering over 100,000 ChatGPT Edu licenses to top Indian institutions. New offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru are planned.
