OpenAI Poaches Berkeley's Pieter Abbeel for Full-Time Robot Push

OpenAI is deepening its research bench in a big way, pulling UC Berkeley professor Pieter Abbeel out of academia to work on robot learning full-time. Ilya Sutskever announced the hire in a blog post, noting that Abbeel had been advising the lab since before its official founding. Now he’s taking a leave from Berkeley to join the mission directly. This isn’t just a flashy academic affiliation; Abbeel’s lab has been behind some of the most visually arresting breakthroughs in getting physical machines to learn complex tasks through deep reinforcement learning.

The stated goal is to merge unsupervised learning with reinforcement learning. Sutskever argues this combination could tackle fundamental limitations in current RL algorithms, which often require painstakingly large amounts of labeled data or simulation time. Abbeel’s expertise makes him a natural fit for solving that bottleneck. She isn’t just a check-writer; she has mapped the space extensively, tracking where the talent and capital are flowing.

For a lab that already poached Ilya Sutskever from Google, adding Abbeel signals that the race for fundamental AI talent hasn’t cooled off. If anything, it’s heating up.
