OpenAI quietly absorbed presentation startup NextSlide months ago

OpenAI has been sitting on a small but telling acquisition for months without anyone noticing. NextSlide, a startup that built a tool to turn prompts and raw notes into polished slide decks, announced this week that it’s joining OpenAI — but founder Ahmed Beshry casually mentioned on LinkedIn that the deal actually closed “earlier this year.” The financial terms aren’t being shared, which is standard for these talent-and-tech focused grabs.

The product itself sounds like something that should have been obvious from the start: you feed it a prompt, some scattered notes, or a document, and it spits out an editable presentation. “Our goal was to make visual communication more accessible and help more people express their ideas clearly,” Beshry wrote in a note now posted on NextSlide’s bare-bones site. The team will now fold into ChatGPT, presumably building native presentation features directly into the platform.

This is not Beshry’s first exit. He previously co-founded Caper AI, the smart shopping cart startup that Instacart snapped up in 2021. That background in computer vision and real-world AI integration makes him a logical fit for OpenAI’s broader ambitions beyond text — visual output, multimodal reasoning, the whole package.

What’s interesting here isn’t the acquisition price, which is probably modest. It’s the signal. OpenAI clearly sees document and presentation creation as table stakes for keeping professionals inside ChatGPT rather than bouncing over to Google Slides or Canva. The question is whether this turns into a real product or just another feature that arrives half-baked in a sidebar. Given how long they’ve been sitting on this before saying anything, the team has presumably been heads-down building something. Whether it’s any good is a different question entirely.
