OpenAI just made it possible to hand your entire iMessage history to ChatGPT. The company has launched an Apple Messages plug-in that connects directly to your Messages inbox, letting the chatbot sort, analyze, edit, search, and even draft and send replies on your behalf. The pitch is productivity: a promotional clip shows a user asking ChatGPT to suggest follow-up messages based on the previous day’s conversations. It also works with Codex and ChatGPT Work, so OpenAI is clearly positioning this as a professional tool, not just a personal convenience.
The privacy mechanics are where things get murky. OpenAI told Bloomberg the plug-in runs locally on a user’s machine and “doesn’t create an index of all someone’s messages.” That’s reassuring phrasing, but it doesn’t answer the obvious follow-up: what exactly does the model see when you ask it to search for something buried in months of chat history? TechCrunch has reached out for clarification. The local-processing claim is notable though — it suggests OpenAI is trying to avoid the kind of backlash that hit when people realized cloud-based assistants were ingesting entire communication histories.
One detail worth flagging: OpenAI explicitly warns users against turning on persistent approval for message sending. The company’s own words are blunt — doing so “removes your final chance to review a message before ChatGPT sends it as you.” That’s an unusual admission for a company selling automation. It essentially acknowledges that a chatbot composing and firing off texts in your voice is risky enough that you should manually approve every single one. Compare that to how Apple has handled its own Apple Intelligence features, which have been far more conservative about letting AI act on your behalf in Messages.
The real question is adoption. People are notoriously protective of their text messages, and this plug-in requires more trust than most AI features — you’re not just asking for suggestions, you’re potentially granting read and send access to your most personal communication channel. If OpenAI can’t clearly articulate the data flow, the plug-in may end up as a curiosity rather than a workflow staple. But for heavy ChatGPT Work users who already live in the ecosystem, the appeal of managing an overloaded inbox through one interface is obvious.
