OpenAI's research VP Dario Amodei exits to launch new AI project

Dario Amodei, the VP of Research who helped architect GPT-2 and GPT-3, is leaving OpenAI after nearly five years. He’s not going alone — a handful of OpenAI colleagues are joining him to start a new venture. Sam Altman confirmed the departure in a blog post, framing it as amicable. The new project, according to what Amodei and his team told OpenAI leadership, will lean harder into pure research and less into product development. That’s a notable distinction at a moment when OpenAI is aggressively commercializing its technology through an API.

Amodei’s exit was announced internally earlier this month. At that meeting, he struck a collegial tone, telling coworkers he was proud of the work they’d done together and emphasizing that everyone shares the same goal of safe AGI. Altman returned the goodwill publicly, saying he’s grateful for Amodei’s contributions and looks forward to a collaborative relationship. The whole thing reads like a very Silicon Valley breakup — all mutual respect and well-wishes — but losing the co-lead of your research direction right after shipping your first commercial product raises questions.

The timing is hard to ignore. OpenAI just launched its API and is figuring out how to turn research into revenue. Amodei’s departure, alongside others, suggests some internal tension around that balance — even if nobody’s saying so directly. The company is clearly aware of the optics, because it simultaneously announced organizational changes designed to integrate research, product, and safety more tightly. Mira Murati, who led the API rollout, now takes on an expanded role as SVP of Research, Product, and Partnerships.

Murati’s appointment signals where OpenAI is placing its bets. She described a strategy of carefully deploying models into products people already use, gaining real-world safety experience along the way, while continuing to publish independent research. It’s a dual-track approach — commercialize responsibly while keeping a foot in pure science. Whether that holds up against the gravitational pull of enterprise customers is the open question. Amodei’s new venture, whatever it turns out to be, will be a useful counterpoint to watch.
