OpenAI taps Stack Overflow's 59M Q&As to sharpen its models

Through Stack Overflow’s OverflowAPI, OpenAI will integrate vetted community content to improve model performance for developers. The upside for Stack Overflow is equally clear. They’ll use OpenAI’s models to power their own OverflowAI initiative, leaning on internal testing to squeeze maximum performance out of the tech. Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s COO, framed it around serving the developer community better, while Stack Overflow CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar emphasized setting “new standards with vetted, trusted, and accurate data” for socially responsible AI.

The attribution component is what makes this interesting. ChatGPT will surface validated technical knowledge with clear links back to the Stack Overflow community — a move that could actually drive traffic back to the platform rather than cannibalizing it. For a site that’s seen engagement wobble since the rise of AI coding assistants, that’s not a trivial detail.
