OpenAI is fundamentally reshaping digital advertising by embedding conversational commerce directly into ChatGPT. The headline feature is the introduction of Sponsored Agents, currently in testing with select US advertisers. This tool allows users who click an ad to initiate a distinct, clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored AI agent. Instead of just viewing a static image, a shopper can ask specific questions about a product—like whether a dining table fits their space or how to care for its finish—before deciding to visit the website. This moves advertising from passive impression to active consultation, giving businesses a chance to address objections in real time.

For marketers, the grunt work of campaign management is getting a major automation boost. OpenAI rolled out new AI creative tools within Ads Manager and ChatGPT Work. Advertisers can now use natural-language prompts to create, update, and analyze campaigns. The system suggests copy and imagery based on landing pages and campaign objectives, though humans retain final editing control. A notable addition is AI-powered text customization, which automatically adapts headlines to fit conversational contexts and translates copy into the user’s preferred language. This reduces the friction of global scaling and personalization, two areas where traditional programmatic ads often struggle.

Integration is the other half of this strategy. OpenAI recognizes that forcing businesses into a new standalone dashboard is a barrier to entry. That is why they launched immediate integrations with HubSpot and Shopify. US-based Shopify merchants can now manage ChatGPT ad campaigns directly through the Shopify App Store, leveraging existing product catalogs. Similarly, HubSpot users can connect their accounts to create ads and track leads without leaving their CRM. The Shopify app will expand internationally on September 23. By meeting businesses where they already operate, OpenAI lowers the technical hurdle for adoption.

This pivot positions ChatGPT not just as a search alternative, but as a transactional layer. While Google and Meta have spent years refining click-through rates, OpenAI is betting on conversation quality. The success of Sponsored Agents will depend on whether users trust these AI intermediaries enough to share purchase intent. If the experience feels helpful rather than intrusive, it could redefine the top of the funnel. But if the agents feel like pushy salesbots, users may retreat to standard search. The balance between utility and intrusion is thin.
