Patreon axes 93 jobs as CEO warns the company 'will be dead in three years' without AI

Patreon is cutting 20 percent of its workforce — roughly 93 people — in a restructuring that CEO Jack Conte frames not as AI replacing humans, but as a survival tactic in an industry the technology has “fundamentally transformed.” In a memo to staff, Conte insisted the layoffs aren’t happening “because we believe AI replaces humans,” but because the shift in how products are built and how companies operate demands a different organizational structure.

The move lands just weeks after Conte laid out a stark ultimatum on the Decoder podcast: “If Patreon does not fully embrace these tools as a product and engineering company… we, as a company, will be dead in three years.” That’s not hedging. That’s a CEO drawing a direct line between internal AI adoption and corporate mortality. The company is reportedly going all-in on AI tools to serve creators, though concrete details on what that looks like remain thin.

This is Patreon’s second major reduction in two years. The platform cut 17 percent of staff in 2022 and shuttered its European offices in Dublin and Berlin. For a company built on the promise of sustainable creator income, the irony is hard to miss. The very tools meant to empower independent artists are now being wielded to justify shrinking the team that supports them.
