RayNeo is betting that the next wave of AI wearables doesn’t need to see anything. The company’s new iO Glasses ship without a camera or built-in speaker, instead leaning entirely on a green waveguide display that projects text into the wearer’s line of sight at 97 percent transparency and roughly 1,300 nits of brightness. That’s bright enough to stay readable in daylight, and the near-invisible display is a deliberate design choice: these glasses are for people who want AI assistance without the privacy baggage that comes with a lens-mounted camera.
What the iO Glasses actually do is listen. Four microphones paired with a bone conduction sensor pick up voices even in loud environments, and an LED indicator lights up whenever the mic is active—a transparency nod that will matter to anyone sitting across from a wearer. The glasses can summarize conversations in real time, extract action items, and suggest calendar entries that users confirm with a simple head nod. There’s also a teleprompter mode and speech-to-text translation covering 40 languages. It’s a productivity tool first, not a content capture device.
On the software side, things get murkier. Out of the box, the glasses run RayNeo AI and Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite. A $9.99 monthly subscription unlocks access to ChatGPT 5.1, Gemini 2.5 Pro, Claude, and DeepSeek. The problem? Every model on that list is already outdated. It’s a strange look for a company pitching cutting-edge hardware to pair it with last season’s AI, and it raises questions about how committed RayNeo is to keeping the software current.
RayNeo isn’t the first to try the camera-free angle—Meta’s early Ray-Ban Stories struggled precisely because they didn’t do enough, and Humane’s Ai Pin cratered trying to do too much. The iO Glasses land somewhere in between: practical, privacy-conscious, and useful in meetings or on stage, but only as good as the models behind them. If RayNeo can’t update its AI stack, a $9.99 subscription starts looking like a tax on early adopters rather than a gateway to the latest capabilities.
