Reddit CEO Steve Huffman isn’t just talking about user growth this quarter — he’s drawing a battle line. In the company’s latest earnings letter and subsequent comments, Huffman positioned Reddit as “the antidote to an automated web,” taking direct aim at Google’s AI Overviews feature that summarizes search results. He argued that while the traditional “10 blue links” model drove “tremendous value” across the internet, AI-generated summaries haven’t come close. “We’re still looking for that win-win,” he told investors, speaking not just for Reddit but claiming the sentiment is shared by “businesses, publishers, retailers.”

This isn’t just philosophical griping. It’s a high-stakes negotiation happening in public. Reddit has a $60 million licensing deal with Google, but the Wall Street Journal recently reported the company is considering walking away. And it’s not alone — the same report named The Economist, Reuters, Politico, and USA Today as other prominent publishers eyeing the exit. For context, Reddit also licenses its data to OpenAI, suggesting the issue isn’t AI itself but the specific mechanics of how Google’s search product handles — or rather, buries — original sources.

The financial stakes here are existential for many publishers. A Pew Research study from last year found that AI Overviews slashed referral traffic to websites by nearly half compared to the old blue-link format.
