Target’s same-day delivery arm just threw its hat in the ring. On Wednesday, Shipt announced “Ask Shipt,” a new AI tool designed to convert natural language prompts into customized, ready-to-buy shopping carts. It is not just a search bar upgrade. The system interprets complex requests, such as building a tailgate spread for 25 people or sourcing budget-friendly school lunches under $35. This move places Shipt squarely in the middle of an intensifying battle for the digital grocery aisle.
The timing is no accident. Instacart launched its own AI assistant, Clementine, earlier this week. Uber Eats and DoorDash have rolled out similar features this year too. Every major player is racing to reduce the friction between craving and checkout. Shipt’s approach leans heavily on convenience and context. Users can upload a photo of a dish from social media or a restaurant menu. The AI identifies the ingredients and populates the cart automatically. It handles the mental load of meal planning so users do not have to.
This integration extends Target’s broader AI strategy. The retailer recently added AI-powered photo search and review summaries to Target.com. Now, those capabilities flow directly into the delivery experience. For busy parents or party planners, the value proposition is clear. Instead of scrolling through endless categories, you tell the app what you need. It does the heavy lifting. The technology promises to make spontaneous entertaining or strict budgeting significantly less stressful.
Yet, execution will determine success. AI assistants often struggle with nuance, brand preferences, or local inventory quirks. If Ask Shipt consistently misinterprets “brunch items” or misses key ingredients from a photo, users will revert to manual searching. The convenience factor only works if the accuracy is high. With Instacart and others moving fast, Shipt cannot afford early stumbles. The question is not whether AI belongs in grocery apps. It is whether Shipt’s version is smart enough to keep customers from switching to the competition.
