Spotify's new AI chat lets you argue with your music player

Spotify is handing Premium subscribers a new way to interrogate their listening habits: a conversational AI interface that lives inside the app. You can text it or talk to it. The idea is straightforward — ask for something you haven’t heard before, tell it a track is dragging and you want something more upbeat, or narrow a request to just an artist’s recent output. The feature also lets you quiz the assistant about what’s currently playing, from songs and podcasts to audiobooks, and it’ll dig through your personal history to answer things like when you first streamed a specific track.

It’s a logical extension of the AI playlists Spotify launched earlier, which already turn text prompts into personalized mixes. But adding a persistent chat layer changes the dynamic. You’re not just generating a one-off playlist anymore; you’re negotiating with the algorithm mid-session. Whether that feels like a power user’s dream or an exhausting back-and-forth depends on how much you trust the model to get it right. Spotify itself is hedging, warning that while simple questions should work, more complex topics might trigger the kinds of hallucinations we’ve come to expect from large language models.

This conversational push lands at an awkward moment for Spotify’s relationship with AI-generated content. The platform has embraced synthetic voices through its ElevenLabs partnership, letting authors publish AI-narrated audiobooks. At the same time, it’s wrestling with a flood of AI-generated songs boosted by bots — a tension that makes the company’s AI enthusiasm feel a bit two-faced. On one screen, Spotify is your curator; on another, it’s the very thing polluting the catalog you’re asking it to navigate.

The beta is rolling out now to Premium users 18 and older in the US, Ireland, and Sweden. Those three markets suggest a cautious, English-first deployment — Ireland and Sweden are small enough to contain any mess while giving Spotify real-world signal. The real test will be whether people actually want a dialogue with their music player, or if they’ll just keep hitting skip.
