Spur lands $200M as bots officially overtake humans on the internet

The internet just crossed a line that security researchers have been dreading. Cloudflare reported last month that bot traffic has surpassed human traffic for the first time in history — a flip driven by a surge in agentic AI systems scraping and interacting with the web. “Thought it would be end of 2027, then early 2027, but agentic traffic growing so fast that bots have now passed human traffic online,” Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince posted on X.

This is the landscape where Spur Intelligence suddenly looks brilliant. The Florida-based startup, founded in 2017 by two former Defense Department engineers, just banked a $200 million round led by Insight Partners. Five years before ChatGPT made AI a household word, Spur was building technology to distinguish real people from bots — not the clumsy ones, but the sophisticated traffic routed through residential proxies and criminal VPNs that mimics genuine user behavior.

Insight’s Thomas Krane nailed the problem in a statement: organizations “can see the activity, but not the infrastructure behind it.” That blind spot has existed for years, but the scale is now fundamentally different. When bots outnumber humans, every login, every API call, every page view becomes a potential threat vector that traditional detection tools weren’t designed to handle. Corporate security teams have been fighting this hill forever, but Cloudflare’s data confirms the terrain has shifted beneath them.

Spur’s timing feels almost suspiciously good. Founded years before the generative AI boom, the company placed a bet that the line between real and fake traffic would eventually blur past recognition. That bet just paid off — and the rest of us are left dealing with an internet where you’re now more likely to interact with a bot than a person.
