The company, which already offered parents 24/7 pediatric access via text message, identified visit notes as the next major pain point worth solving. Doctors write detailed observations in medical shorthand during visits. GPT-4 now takes that raw input and spins it into a clear, jargon-free summary that parents can actually understand. A pediatrician still reviews everything before it goes out the door, but the heavy lifting of translation and composition is handled by the model.

OpenAI won the contract for a specific, unsexy reason: the ability to sign a Business Associate Agreement and meet HIPAA compliance requirements. For a health startup handling patient data, that checkbox matters more than any benchmark score. Summer Health fine-tuned the model in collaboration with OpenAI and layered in a clinical review process to keep the AI’s output grounded in medical reality. Matthew Woo, co-founder and Head of Product, captured the sentiment bluntly: “We thought this was something we would get to in 5 years. Seeing that vision pulled forward has been amazing.”

Delays in completing visit notes dropped by 400%, and parent feedback has been, by the company’s account, the best they’ve ever received. Parents reported feeling more informed about their child’s care plan and follow-up steps. The question now isn’t whether AI can help with clinical documentation—that much seems obvious. It’s how quickly other telehealth providers will follow suit, and whether the efficiency gains hold up when scaled beyond a focused pediatric use case.
