Tim Cook says you'll be able to pay for more Siri AI — here's why

Apple CEO Tim Cook dropped a quiet but telling hint on Thursday’s earnings call: the company is planning a paywall for heavy AI use. “We will have some kind of upgrade possibilities on iCloud Plus where people can buy up the stack,” Cook said, responding to an analyst question about whether Apple could monetize its AI features directly. Translation — if you want to use the new Siri AI a lot, you’re probably going to pay extra for the privilege.

The context here is important. Apple has already confirmed that its on-device and server-side AI features, including image generation tools like Genmoji, come with daily usage caps. The company’s explanation at WWDC was straightforward: server-side models are computationally expensive. iCloud Plus subscribers already get “increased access,” but Cook’s phrasing suggests Apple sees room for dedicated high-capacity tiers — something closer to an API usage model than a flat subscription.

Cook also said he believes users will want to use Apple Intelligence “a lot.” That’s the bet. The entire Siri overhaul arriving with iOS 27 this fall is designed to make the assistant genuinely useful — answering questions about what’s on your screen, taking action across apps, and even offering a standalone ChatGPT-style interface. If Apple is right about engagement, usage caps become a friction point, and friction points are where subscription tiers are born.

Apple’s services division just brought in $30.74 billion, so the monetization machinery is well-oiled. The question is whether consumers will stomach paying for AI access on a device they already bought at a premium. Google and Samsung are baking similar features into their phones without explicit AI surcharges — at least for now. Apple’s move could normalize the idea that AI isn’t just a feature. It’s a recurring cost.
