Waze adds Gemini AI for conversational navigation and reporting

Waze is getting a significant injection of Google’s Gemini AI, and it’s not just a cosmetic update. The navigation app is rolling out a suite of features that fundamentally change how you interact with it—from finding a destination by just describing what you need, to reporting road closures with your voice instead of tapping through menus. You can now ask things like “Find me a coffee shop that’s open right now” or “Find me parking close to Grand Mall,” and Waze will serve up options. The conversational reporting feature lets you say “The road is closed here” and have those details sent to local map editors. These Gemini-powered capabilities are hitting the Waze beta community globally on both Android and iOS right now.

Beyond the voice stuff, Waze is leaning hard into personalization. The app will now suggest routes based on your trip history and its understanding of local traffic patterns. If you’re a highway person, it’ll prioritize those. If you’d rather not have the app make assumptions, you can pick alternate routes or turn personalization off entirely in settings. That feature is rolling out globally. There’s also a new “less chatty” mode for when you want to focus on music or a podcast—it minimizes voice prompts and keeps them short, though you’ll still get alerts for hazards and turns. Again, global rollout on Android and iOS.

Motorcycle riders get their own dedicated mode, which is a smart move. It uses AI to account for two-wheeler-specific shortcuts and road restrictions, delivering more accurate ETAs and flagging hazards that are uniquely dangerous for riders: potholes, speed bumps, raised crosswalks, shoulder endings, and narrow bridges. The motorcycle mode is live now in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, and the Philippines, with more countries promised.

What’s interesting here isn’t just feature parity with Apple Maps—it’s Google using Waze as a testbed for Gemini’s real-world utility. The conversational search and reporting features are a much more natural interface than drilling through menus while driving. The question is whether the map editor community can keep up with a potential flood of voice-reported updates, and how well the personalized routing actually reflects driver preferences versus just reinforcing habits. Still, for an app that built its reputation on community input, making that input hands-free feels like a logical, long-overdue step.
