Whisker’s pitch for the $899 Litter-Robot 5 Pro is ambitious: a self-scooping litter box that uses dual cameras, sensors, and machine learning to track each cat’s bathroom habits and flag potential health issues before they become serious. Spend six months with it, as I did, and the reality falls well short of the promise. The hardware is genuinely excellent — the Pro dispatches waste efficiently, sports a larger bin and dome than the $699 Litter-Robot 4, and swaps that model’s baffling LED indicators for an actual LCD screen. But the AI smarts that justify the premium? They’re not ready.

The most glaring failure is cat identification. Whisker’s system couldn’t distinguish my large gray-and-white tabby from my small tuxedo cat, eventually merging them into what the app believed were two identical animals. That’s a foundational problem. If the software can’t tell which cat visited the box, every downstream health insight — weight tracking, frequency monitoring, waste analysis — becomes unreliable. The new WasteID feature, which claims to differentiate between urine and feces and expedite cleaning for the latter, also repeatedly misidentified what it was looking at.

Then there’s the subscription. Whisker charges $8 a month for the Plus plan covering AI health features and video storage, yet across six months of testing it delivered not one actionable insight for my middle-aged cat Smokey. The interior cameras, which would let owners actually see what’s happening inside the tray, only support live view — no recordings, despite marketing that implies otherwise. Whisker says that capability is ‘coming soon,’ but shipping hardware with a core advertised feature still pending feels like a pattern the pet tech industry has repeated too often.

I did appreciate being able to remotely check the camera feed when I got a ‘cycle interrupted’ alert to make sure no cat was trapped inside. That’s a real safety benefit. But for $200 more than the Litter-Robot 4 plus a recurring subscription, you’re paying for capabilities that don’t function reliably today. If you want a premium pooper-scooper, the 5 Pro delivers. If you want the health-monitoring promises, wait.
