Fundamentals
Generative AI
A category of AI that creates new content — text, images, audio, video, or code — by learning patterns from existing data and generating novel outputs.
Generative AI has become the dominant AI paradigm since 2022. Unlike traditional AI that classifies or predicts, generative AI produces original outputs based on learned data distributions.
Major modalities of generative AI:
- Text Generation: LLMs like GPT-4, Claude, and LLaMA produce human-like writing
- Image Generation: Diffusion models like Midjourney, DALL-E 3, and Stable Diffusion create images from text prompts
- Video Generation: Models like Sora, Runway, and Kling generate and edit video
- Audio Generation: Text-to-speech, music generation, and voice cloning
- Code Generation: Models like GitHub Copilot and Codex assist in software development
Generative AI models are typically built on foundation models and rely on architectures like transformers and diffusion models. The field continues to advance rapidly, with emerging capabilities in 3D generation, world modeling, and real-time interactive content creation.
