Anthropic's Opus 5 ships at half price, drops mandatory data retention

Anthropic just made a move that smells less like a routine model update and more like a direct shot at enterprise wallets. Opus 5 is here, and the headline figure is impossible to ignore: it costs half as much as the previous Fable model. For companies running inference at scale, that’s not a tweak — it’s a line item that just got cut in two.

But the pricing is only half the story. The bigger shift for many compliance teams is what Opus 5 doesn’t do. Anthropic dropped the mandatory data retention requirement that dogged earlier enterprise deals. No more forced logging of prompts and completions on Anthropic’s servers. That’s been a dealbreaker for regulated industries and anyone with strict data residency rules. Removing it puts Opus 5 on a different competitive footing, especially against Azure OpenAI’s enterprise configurations.

Performance-wise, Anthropic isn’t being shy about the benchmarks. The model scores in the 99th percentile on the LMSys Chatbot Arena, matching or edging out GPT-4o across reasoning and coding tasks. More interesting is the extended context window — now 1 million tokens — which opens the door to workloads like full codebase analysis and long-document synthesis that were previously awkward or impossible to run cost-effectively.

What I’m watching is how this changes procurement conversations. When a model is both cheaper and privacy-preserving, it stops being a science experiment and becomes a line-of-business tool. The question isn’t whether Opus 5 is good. It’s whether the enterprise customers who’ve been waiting for a reason to diversify away from OpenAI now have the cover they need to do it.
