Apple puts ChatGPT in Siri and Writing Tools with GPT-4o

OpenAI and Apple made it official at WWDC 2024: ChatGPT is coming to iOS, iPadOS, and macOS later this year. The integration, powered by GPT-4o, weaves OpenAI’s capabilities directly into Siri and the systemwide Writing Tools — no app-switching required. Siri will be able to hand off questions to ChatGPT, along with any relevant documents or photos, and surface the answer inline. The Writing Tools get the same treatment, letting users generate text or tap into image creation without leaving their workflow.

Apple’s privacy-first posture is front and center here. Requests sent through Siri and Writing Tools won’t be stored by OpenAI, and IP addresses are obscured by default. Users who pay for ChatGPT can link their accounts to unlock premium features, but the base experience is free and doesn’t even require an account. Apple frames this as optional intelligence — the system asks permission before shipping anything off to OpenAI’s servers.

This isn’t some vague roadmap item, either. The integration lands later this year across the entire Apple ecosystem. That timeline puts real pressure on Google and Samsung, both of whom have been racing to stuff their own AI assistants into phones. But Apple’s approach — partner with the best model provider while keeping privacy controls in-house — sidesteps the awkwardness of a subpar homegrown assistant.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s team framed the deal as mission-aligned: ‘Apple shares our commitment to safety and innovation, and this partnership aligns with OpenAI’s mission to make advanced AI accessible to everyone.’ It’s a savvy move for OpenAI, too. Apple’s install base is enormous, and putting ChatGPT in front of hundreds of millions of users who never bothered downloading a separate app could reshape how mainstream consumers think about AI. The question now is whether Apple users actually trust it enough to say yes when Siri asks.
