OpenAI is turning ChatGPT from a shopping advisor into a personal shopper that can actually complete a purchase. The company just launched Instant Checkout, a feature that lets U.S. users buy products directly inside the chat interface without ever visiting a merchant’s website. It’s a quiet but significant shift for the 700 million people who use the platform weekly, and it signals a serious move into what OpenAI calls “agentic commerce.”
The initial rollout supports single-item purchases from Etsy sellers, with over a million Shopify merchants—including brands like Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori—lined up to join soon. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and even free-tier users get access. The company is clear that this is an early step. Multi-item carts and international expansion are on the roadmap, but for now, the scope is deliberately narrow.
Under the hood, this is powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol, a new open standard co-developed with Stripe. OpenAI isn’t just building a feature; it’s open-sourcing the plumbing. Merchants already using Stripe can flip the switch with a single line of code. Those on other payment processors can still participate via Stripe’s new Shared Payment Token API or by adopting the protocol’s Delegated Payments Spec. The key selling point for merchants: they remain the merchant of record, keeping full control over fulfillment, returns, and customer relationships. ChatGPT simply acts as a secure pipe, passing encrypted payment tokens and order details with explicit user permission at each step.
The company is bending over backward to address trust concerns before they take root, which is smart. Product rankings are explicitly unsponsored and organic. Instant Checkout items receive no preferential placement in results. The payment tokens are scoped to specific amounts and specific merchants. This isn’t a recommendation engine dressed up as a helper—it’s a transaction layer bolted onto a conversation. Still, the real test will be whether users feel comfortable handing over the final “buy” click to an AI, even one they chat with daily.
