Instacart's ChatGPT app now lets you check out without leaving the chat

Instacart and OpenAI are making a bet that the future of grocery shopping doesn’t look like an app or a website. It looks like a conversation. The two companies just announced the first fully integrated grocery checkout experience inside ChatGPT, letting users go from meal idea to doorstep delivery without ever leaving the chat interface.
Here’s how it works: a user types something like “Help me shop for apple pie ingredients on Instacart,” and the Instacart app surfaces right inside ChatGPT. Once they sign in with their Instacart account, OpenAI’s models pull together relevant items from local retailers and assemble a ready-to-review cart. The real kicker is checkout. Instacart is the first app to offer an Instant Checkout experience directly within ChatGPT, built on what the company calls the Agentic Commerce Protocol. No tab switching, no bouncing between apps. You pay, and Instacart dispatches a shopper.
“Instacart and ChatGPT are redefining what’s possible in AI-powered shopping,” said Anirban Kundu, Instacart’s CTO, framing the move as turning simple conversations into real-world action. Nick Turley, VP and Head of ChatGPT, called it “another step toward bringing our vision to life—where AI delivers helpful suggestions and connects directly to real-world services.” The integration builds on a relationship that already ran deep. Instacart was an early contributor to OpenAI’s Operator research preview and uses ChatGPT Enterprise internally for workflows, plus Codex to power an internal coding agent.
Is this the agentic commerce future we’ve been promised? Possibly. But I’d watch the friction points. Grocery shopping is messy — substitutions, dietary restrictions, brand preferences — and a conversational interface has to get all of that right. OpenAI is clearly pushing hard to make ChatGPT a platform where transactions actually happen, not just a place to get recipe ideas. With more than a million business customers already using OpenAI’s platform, the company wants to be where the money changes hands. Getting groceries right could open the door to a lot more than apple pie.
💡 Key Takeaways

- The integration relies on a new Agentic Commerce Protocol, signaling Instacart's ambition to define the infrastructure layer for AI-powered transactions.
- OpenAI is rapidly positioning ChatGPT as a transactional platform, not just an information tool, with direct integrations to real-world services like grocery delivery.
