Duolingo taps GPT-4 to finally teach you why your French is wrong

Duolingo is making its biggest bet yet on generative AI, and it’s not just about making lessons more addictive. The company is rolling out two GPT-4-powered features under a new subscription tier called Duolingo Max that aim to solve the hardest parts of learning a language: actual conversation and understanding your own mistakes.

The first feature, Role Play, lets learners have free-flowing, unscripted conversations with an AI partner. We’re not talking about ordering a croissant from a pre-written menu. Principal product manager Edwin Bodge says the goal was to talk about “basketball or the bliss of reaching the top of a mountain” — the kind of niche, immersive chat that scripted bots could never handle. GPT-4’s broad training data is what makes that flexibility possible.

The second feature, Explain my Answer, tackles the frustration of getting something wrong and having no idea why. Lead engineer Bill Peterson admitted that earlier efforts with GPT-3 were too unreliable for teaching grammar; one bad explanation could actively harm learning. GPT-4 gives the team enough confidence to let the model dynamically explain errors and even go deeper if the learner asks follow-up questions. Duolingo plans to judge the quality of those responses by tracking how many clarification layers a user needs before they feel ready to jump back into the lesson.

Under the hood, the shift has been dramatic. Peterson says his team built a convincing prototype within a day — a process he described as going “from zero-to-ninety-five percent very quickly,” after which engineers hand-tune the final 5%. That’s a radical change from traditional engineering timelines. Duolingo Max launches first for Spanish and French learners, with more languages on the roadmap. For the 50 million-plus monthly users, this isn’t just a new tier. It’s the first time the app can credibly claim to teach through implicit learning, not just repetition.
