Nscale is stacking its deck with heavy hitters. The U.K.-based AI infrastructure startup announced that Fidji Simo has joined its board of directors, adding another layer of elite tech credibility just months before a anticipated public listing. Simo isn’t just any executive; she served as the CEO of AGI Deployment at OpenAI, effectively the number two leader at the lab, before stepping down in July due to health reasons. Her resume reads like a roadmap for modern tech scaling: she led Instacart through its 2023 IPO, spent over a decade at Meta running the Facebook app, and currently sits on Shopify’s board.

She joins a roster that already includes Sheryl Sandberg, Susan Decker, and Nick Clegg. This isn’t a casual advisory role. Nscale founder Josh Payne emphasized that Simo understands the brutal physics of scaling products for billions of users. “That’s what we’re building for at Nscale,” Payne said. He noted that the board was constructed deliberately to bring financial rigor and operating depth to a company facing the intense demands of global AI infrastructure. For a startup that designs and operates data centers, having someone who has managed the backend stress of Facebook and the logistical complexity of Instacart is a strategic signal to investors.

The timing is no accident. Nscale is reportedly looking to raise up to $3.5 billion, according to Bloomberg sources, fueling a valuation surge that has defined its first two years. The market for AI compute is insatiable, and Nscale is positioning itself as a critical pipe in that system. By bringing in Simo, the company is signaling it is ready for the scrutiny of public markets and the operational heavylifting required to manage billions in capital expenditure.

This move highlights a broader trend where AI infrastructure firms are recruiting leaders with proven IPO and hyper-scale experience to validate their business models. While many AI startups rely on technical founders, Nscale is betting that governance and operational pedigree will be just as valuable as GPU counts when courting institutional investors later this year.
