Google's Pixel 11 starts at $899 as Gemini learns sign language

Google packed its Made by Google 2026 keynote with hardware refreshes and a clear message: Gemini is becoming the connective tissue across every Pixel device. The Pixel 11 lineup leads the charge, starting at $899 — a $100 bump over the Pixel 10 — with Google citing the ongoing RAM supply shortage and a decision to drop the 128GB storage tier as the culprits behind the increase. Base storage now lands at 256GB, and the redesigned camera bar is more than 40% thinner, wrapped in an all-glass surface that spans the phone’s width. Color options include Frost, Hibiscus, Pistachio, and Obsidian.

But the more interesting story is accessibility. Google is expanding Live Transcribe to support American Sign Language, using the Pixel Camera to translate signing into text in real time. That’s a genuinely meaningful move for deaf and hard-of-hearing users who have long been underserved by voice-centric AI tools. Google also introduced Rambler, a voice-input feature designed to parse run-on sentences, filler words, and messy speech — the way people actually talk rather than the way they type. It’s a quiet admission that voice assistants have been trained on idealized language, and Google is finally trying to close that gap.

On the hardware side, the Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL lean into durability, with Google claiming more than twice the scratch resistance of the Pixel 10 Pro and improved drop protection. The Pro starts at $1,099. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is nearly 10% lighter and almost 1mm thinner, with a 48-megapixel main camera and a hinge redesign Google says makes it three times more durable than its predecessor. Foldables have historically struggled with long-term reliability, so that’s a claim worth testing once review units land.

The most Apple-flavored announcement is the Pixel Tag, a $29 AirTag competitor that plugs into Android’s Find Hub network. A four-pack runs $99, and users can locate tags from a Pixel Watch or ask Gemini to ring one through Pixel Buds. It’s late to the party — Apple shipped AirTags in 2021 — but Android’s tracking network has matured enough that Google’s entry could actually pressure third-party options from Tile and Chipolo rather than just Apple. The Pixel Watch 5 starts at $399, with a Stephen Curry edition at $579, and both sizes now surface monthly blood pressure and insulin resistance trends in the Google Health app.
