Google sets September 2026 death date for Assistant as Gemini takes over Android

Google has finally named the date. In an email to users, the company confirmed that Google Assistant will stop working on most Android devices, Wear OS watches, headphones, and Android Auto starting September 4, 2026. The replacement, Gemini, won’t give you a choice — once the switch flips, there’s no toggle to go back. Cars with “Google built-in” get a temporary reprieve, but the writing is on the dashboard for them too.

The timeline itself has been a moving target. The shutdown was originally pegged for 2025, as reported by 9to5Google, before getting pushed to 2026. That extra year suggests Google knows this isn’t just a branding exercise. Moving millions of users from a deterministic command system to a probabilistic large language model is genuinely risky. Assistant was built to be boring and reliable — you said “turn off the lights,” it turned off the lights. Gemini, for all its reasoning prowess, can still hallucinate or misinterpret a straightforward request in ways the old guard never did.

This is where the rubber meets the road for AI assistants. Google is betting that users will tolerate a little weirdness in exchange for a model that can actually hold a conversation and handle multi-step tasks. The expansion plan is ambitious: Gemini is also heading to Google TV, Home speakers, and Nest smart displays. If it fumbles basic smart home commands on a $100 speaker the way it occasionally fumbles factual queries, the backlash will be swift and loud.

I’ve seen this movie before — Microsoft crammed Cortana into everything and then quietly euthanized it when users revolted. Google’s advantage is that Gemini is a genuinely capable model, but capability and reliability are different beasts. The next 18 months will tell us whether the public is ready to treat their phone assistant less like a butler and more like a brilliant but occasionally drunk friend.
