Nvidia is paying $12.93 billion for Hugging Face, the platform widely described as the “GitHub for AI,” in a deal that puts the world’s most valuable chipmaker in control of the most popular hub for open-source machine learning models, datasets, and developer tools. The acquisition comes just two years after Hugging Face was valued at $4.5 billion — meaning Nvidia is paying nearly triple that figure for a company generating roughly $150 million in annualized revenue.

The strategic logic isn’t hard to spot. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are all reportedly working on their own AI chips, a direct threat to Nvidia’s hardware dominance. Owning Hugging Face gives Nvidia a direct pipeline to the open-source developer community — the same community that has been racing to close the gap with proprietary models. Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s CEO, addressed the obvious conflict-of-interest concern head-on, insisting that “Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem” and that “Nvidia compute will not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face.”

Those assurances will face serious scrutiny. Hugging Face reportedly rejected a $500 million investment from Nvidia just last year, concerned about what a single dominant investor would mean for platform neutrality. Now that Nvidia owns the whole thing, those concerns don’t disappear — they multiply. Developers who’ve built workflows around competing hardware, including AMD and custom silicon from cloud providers, will be watching closely for any sign of preferential treatment.

The acquisition caps off weeks of speculation that began August 23rd when Business Insider reported Hugging Face was exploring a $13 billion sale. Nvidia had participated in the company’s 2023 funding round, so this isn’t a cold courtship. But the price tag is striking for a company that barely monetizes its massive user base. Nvidia clearly isn’t buying revenue here — it’s buying influence, distribution, and a hedge against a future where its chips matter less than the software ecosystem running on top of them.
