OpenAI buys Mac assistant Sky to put ChatGPT on your desktop

OpenAI isn’t just trying to make its models smarter. It’s trying to make them actually useful on your computer. The company announced today it has acquired Software Applications Incorporated, the maker of a Mac app called Sky, in a deal that signals a hard pivot toward deep operating system integration. The entire Sky team is joining OpenAI, and the plan is to fold Sky’s capabilities directly into ChatGPT.

Sky is a natural language interface that floats over your macOS desktop. It understands what’s on your screen and can reach into your apps to take action — writing, coding, planning, or just managing the chaos of a workday. That’s a fundamentally different proposition from a chatbot waiting for you in a browser tab. It’s ambient, aware, and capable of doing rather than just suggesting.

“We’re building a future where ChatGPT doesn’t just respond to your prompts, it helps you get things done,” said Nick Turley, VP and Head of ChatGPT. Ari Weinstein, the co-founder and CEO of Software Applications Incorporated, framed the acquisition around a long-standing frustration finally becoming solvable. “We’ve always wanted computers to be more empowering, customizable, and intuitive,” he said. “With LLMs, we can finally put the pieces together.”

The deal had an interesting wrinkle in its governance. An investment fund associated with Sam Altman held a passive stake in Software Applications Incorporated, so the acquisition was led by Turley and Fidji Simo and approved by the independent Transaction and Audit Committees of OpenAI’s board. That’s not a casual detail — it’s a signal that OpenAI is being careful about conflicts as it spends its war chest. The acquisition suggests OpenAI sees the next battleground not in benchmark scores, but in who controls the layer between the user and their operating system. Apple has Apple Intelligence. Microsoft has Copilot. Now OpenAI wants a piece of the desktop itself.
