OpenAI cuts deal for Reddit's data, and Sam Altman's stake just got more interesting

Reddit and OpenAI announced a partnership Thursday that will pipe the platform’s sprawling, real-time conversation data directly into ChatGPT and future products. The deal gives OpenAI access to Reddit’s Data API — a firehose of structured, authentic, and often unfiltered human chatter that’s become catnip for AI companies hungry for training material. For Reddit’s part, the company gets to build new AI-powered features for its users and moderators on top of OpenAI’s models, and OpenAI signs on as an advertising partner.

The commercial logic here isn’t subtle. Reddit has been signaling for months that its vast archive of posts and comments is a premium asset, not something to be scraped for free. After cutting off unauthorized access and striking a $60 million annual deal with Google earlier this year, the company is now monetizing its corpus again — this time with the outfit that kicked off the generative AI frenzy. “Reddit has become one of the internet’s largest open archives of authentic, relevant, and always up to date human conversations about anything and everything,” the companies said in a joint statement, framing the deal as a win for “a connected internet.”

Then there’s the disclosure that makes every media reporter’s eyebrow twitch: Sam Altman is a Reddit shareholder. The announcement takes pains to note that OpenAI’s COO led the partnership and the company’s independent board signed off. That’s the right governance language, but it doesn’t erase the optics of Altman’s company paying for access to a platform he personally owns a piece of. It’s the kind of overlapping interest that makes governance experts reach for aspirin.

What Reddit actually gets beyond the check is worth watching. Building AI features on OpenAI’s platform could genuinely improve the moderator experience — a perennially under-resourced corner of the internet. But the advertising partnership might be the sleeper detail here. Reddit’s ad business is still young, and having a deep-pocketed AI company as both customer and collaborator gives it a narrative to tell Wall Street. Whether users feel the same warmth toward having their posts fed into the ChatGPT maw is a question the announcement leaves pointedly unasked.
