The Department of Defense just handed ChatGPT and Grok to roughly 3 million civilian and military personnel through GenAI.mil, its secure portal for commercial frontier models. The custom versions—ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government—join Google Gemini, which was already available, and give DoD employees an official channel that bypasses the data-harvesting machinery baked into consumer products. That’s the real draw here: these tools work like the public versions but without feeding sensitive queries back into training pipelines or corporate data lakes.

Adoption has been swift. GenAI.mil has onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users since launching last year, which means more than half the department’s workforce has poked around at least once. ChatGPT Mil will focus on the unglamorous but essential stuff—administrative tasks, logistics, planning, policy work—with support for files, projects, and custom GPTs. Grok for Government gets positioned far more aggressively. The Pentagon’s release frames it through Starshield AI, SpaceX’s secure satellite network, and promises ‘immediate productivity gains’ and faster mission execution across ‘numerous operational contexts.’

What’s missing is just as telling. Anthropic’s Claude is nowhere in the lineup. The Trump administration labeled the frontier lab a supply-chain risk after Anthropic refused to give the Pentagon unrestricted use of its tools and pushed back on removing certain safety guardrails. The company is fighting that designation in court, but for now the practical consequence is clear: the DoD’s generative AI portfolio is being built without Anthropic altogether.

The broader pattern here isn’t new—the Pentagon has also cut deals with AWS, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI—but the speed is notable. A year ago, the idea of a million-plus DoD personnel casually querying commercial LLMs for routine paperwork would have triggered months of procurement review. Now it’s just the default. The open question is what happens when these tools inevitably get pushed beyond routine unclassified work, and whether the guardrail fight Anthropic picked becomes a footnote or a precedent.
