Superhuman is skipping the internal build and buying its way into the meeting automation race. The email giant has acquired Fathom, a Y Combinator-backed notetaking startup valued at $94 million in 2024. This move signals a strategic pivot from simple productivity tools to proactive AI agents that can act on meeting data without constant user prompting. Rather than wrestling with the technical complexities of audio processing and transcription in-house, Superhuman opted to integrate a mature product with over 400,000 monthly active users.
Shishir Mehrotra, Superhuman’s CEO, admitted the decision came after a difficult internal trial. The team realized that building a reliable notetaker is deceptively hard. “A lot of these products make the job feel really easy, but it’s actually quite tricky to do a great job in all parts,” Mehrotra said. By acquiring Fathom, Superhuman bypasses years of R&D and gains immediate access to sophisticated transcription infrastructure. This allows the company to focus on what it does best: weaving that data into its existing suite of email, calendar, and database tools.
For Fathom, the acquisition offers a distribution lifeline in an increasingly crowded market. Competitors like Granola and Read AI are raising millions, but standing alone requires massive customer acquisition spend. Richard White, Fathom’s CEO, noted that Superhuman’s reach provides a shortcut to scale. “If we were to operate Fathom as a stand-alone company, we would have to build a lot of things that are already in the Superhuman platform,” White explained. The deal leverages Superhuman’s 40 million user base to push Fathom’s technology into mainstream workflows.
The real prize here isn’t just better notes; it’s context-aware automation. With meeting transcripts flowing directly into Superhuman’s ecosystem, AI agents can now draft follow-up emails, update CRM entries, and schedule next steps automatically. This closes the loop between discussion and execution. While other platforms still require users to manually trigger workflows, Superhuman aims to make the AI proactive. The question now is whether this integration will be seamless enough to justify the premium price tag for everyday users.
